Chapter nineteen

Nadia

Yesterday was perfect. An indulgent spa morning, followed by an enchanting sleigh ride, rounded off with French wine and cheese. I’m holding onto the knowledge that I did everything I could to make sure my family had a special day. Everything I do is for them. Seeing my girls looking more relaxed and my grandchildren smiling has given me hope that this holiday can be the balm this family needs to help us recharge and give us strength for the coming months. But the efforts of making sure my family are well-looked after are starting to take their toll on me. I barely slept a wink last night.

I pull another load of washing out of the tumble dryer and then busy myself with making sure the children’s rucksacks are filled with everything they could possibly need for a day on the slopes: spare gloves, drinks, tissues, plenty of healthy snacks and a secret stash of biscuits from their nana. Today we’re heading back out for ski lessons. I know Freya is nervous, so I write her a quick note of encouragement on a fluorescent orange Post-it note and attach it to her sandwiches.

I can’t wait to get out onto the snow again. I loved the feeling of working my muscles, the wind in my hair, and I’m looking forward to doing it all over again. Grabbing the suncream, I remember to slather a generous amount on my face. I don’t want to return home with visor marks, thank you very much.

I’m determined that we’re going to have an equally brilliant day today and make even more special memories. Yes, I’m probably fixating on this but it’s important to me. The fallout from Aaron’s death has been enormous and we’ve all handled our emotions in very different ways. And I know that things are likely to get harder because Jesse’s crown court date is looming. It’s been delayed due to the Christmas holidays and a general backlog, but we should know at the end of February what his sentence is. As he’s pleading guilty, he should get a reduction in the amount of time he spends in prison, and because he’s intending to say it wasn’t pre-planned and his judgement was impaired by alcohol those factors should also be taken into consideration. But, the fact is, he killed a man. He’s going to go to prison for a very long time and there’s no telling how Sasha and Freya will react once the reality is confirmed. Leah was also close to Jesse – they were like brother and sister – and she’s going to be rocked once the court ruling is decided as well.

I exhale slowly and try to distract myself from my racing thoughts. I set to work on filling my own rucksack for the day. I make sure to pack my spare sunscreen and double check the first aid kit is still wedged in the front compartment of my bag, along with a second purse containing emergency money. I like to plan for every eventuality.
